What is a catalytic converter?

The catalytic converter looks similar to a muffler. It is usually a stainless steel enclosure containing a ceramic honeycomb impregnated with platinum, palladium and rhodium. These elements help clean harmful exhaust gases that would otherwise be thrown out of the tail pipe.

It is common for a four-cylinder engine to be equipped with one or two catalytic converters, with six- and eight-cylinder engines having up to four.
