When exhaust gas passes through catalyst, harmful hydrocarbons (HC), carbon monoxide (CO) and nitrogen oxides (NO _X ) form the internal combustion engine and are converted into harmless CO ₂ , H ₂ O and N ₂ to achieve the purpose of purification .
